My Philosophy

My name is James McGaughey, I graduated from the University of Ulster in 2017 with a bachelor of science degree in Physiotherapy. Since then I have worked in private practice, with a year out, in which I went traveling.

When I assess and treat my patients I don't just address the symptoms they're presenting with. My goal is to figure out what the root cause of their symptoms are to see why their issues are arising in the first place!

By figuring out what the root cause/s is/are I can direct the treatment so we can create lasting changes that last.

My job is to guide & provide my patients with the tools to help themselves - this way they don't rely on me to help their aches and pains, but can immediately do the things I've shown them to keep them moving and improving.

In terms of assessment, I will look at how you breathe and how you walk. These are the 2 most common movement patterns that everyone does, so if we do these really well, then our ability to function well throughout the day should improve as a result, our symptoms should improve also.

When discussing the reason behind your symptoms I want to give clarity and understanding of why your symptoms are occurring. That way you can apply the things I teach you to everything you do in your day-to-day, and therefore make decisions that will continue to help you on your journey.

A lot of my treatment methods have evolved from basic strength and conditioning principles where we want to stress certain areas of your body to make them stronger and more resilient to injury. On top of this, I want to provide you with the tools to not only create resiliency in these tissues but also learn how to move your body better in every direction.

Lastly, but most importantly, all these exercises and treatment sessions need to revolve around YOU and YOUR current situation - tying in not just your biology, but your psyche and even aspects of your social life. This biopsychosocial model will help you understand your symptoms and then you'll be able to manage your thoughts, your beliefs, and your movements so that you can reach your goals!

A little about me, my sport, and injury history...

Growing up I was always very into most sports - especially football and rugby, both of which I played in school.

Since I was 16 I've regularly attended the gym to lift weights and have trained consistently since then, always striving to learn and educate myself on all things health & fitness.

I've learned how to Olympic weightlift, done some Crossfit, and most recently taken up powerlifting, so I have lots of experience in these areas.

When I was weightlifting and playing some rugby (before I started my physiotherapy degree) I was littered with injuries...

These include:

Chronic Patellar Tendinopathies in both knees

Sub-acromial (shoulder) Impingement

Regular neck strains

Reoccurring Hamstring tears

Minor Lower Back Muscle Strains

Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Many Ankle Sprains

I've experienced a fair few injuries over the years, so I know what it's like to struggle to walk down the stairs and to be sat on the sidelines itching to get back onto the playing field. I've been through the rehab, I've learned what works, and what doesn't work!

Not only that but I currently compete in powerlifting and am always trying to take my own training to the next level. Everything I show to my patients is thoroughly tried and tested so that they can get the most out of their rehab and get to their destination as soon as possible.
